Manual Handling: A Critical Element in Workplace Safety At the heart of every successful logistics operation is a strong commitment to workplace health and safety (WHS), and this is especially true at Amazon's Jupiter ART time. As a WHS Officer, it's my responsibility to ensure that employees can perform their tasks efficiently and safely, with a key focus on manual handling practices. Manual handling is a fundamental part of operations at Amazon, from lifting and carrying packages to operating equipment. Without the right safety procedures, these everyday tasks can lead to injuries that impact both the health of employees and the efficiency of operations. That's why we prioritize:Proper training in lifting techniquesUse of ergonomic tools to reduce strainContinuous risk assessments to mitigate potential hazardsBy fostering a culture of safety, we not only protect our team but also enhance productivity and operational success.During Amazon's Jupiter ART we strive to be a model of operational excellence while keeping our most important asset—our people—safe. I am spending the week in London , at Amazon #LHR14 to attend training as part of my #development plan. Whilst having dinner in my hotel room, I came across this brilliant quote on HSE Insider ‘s page 👇: “I am a Safety Professional. I am not a police officer and I do not write citations. My job is to monitor, audit, review and advise. I do not have the ability nor the desire to "Fire" anyone. My goal is to make sure each employee goes home to his/her family at the end of their shift. I will be firm, fair and consistent with my responses. My ability to communicate is my strongest tool. I understand the ‘making someone follow a rule’ is easy, but ‘making them want to follow it’s is my job. I identify gaps in the processes and advise my client on the best way to correct it. My positive attitude, personality and common sense will take me further than any degree or certification I may have. Because, I am a Safety Professional.”Do you recognise yourself? 👷🏼♂️I Do! 👷🏼♂️ #learninganddevelopment #healthandsafety

HIRING | Compliance & WHS Officer | AlburyWHS & Compliance Officers - overlooked and under-appreciated. We’re preaching to the choir! You know “compliance” and “safety” aren't just buzzwords – it's the seatbelt keeping everything running smoothly on the road. But, we’ll get back to this. Let's get a few things straight first;Wellbeing programs, Learning and Development Opportunities, Income Protection…Tick. Tick. Tick.A hybrid role? Shut the front door. They offer flexibility for remote work, allowing for 1-2 days per week from home or from their Albury office. So, what's the deal? A WHS & Compliance Officer like yourself understands it's not just a job – it's knowing that every regulation followed means a safer workplace for everyone. With their head office based 50 minutes from Albury, we are now looking for a WHS & Compliance Officer to join the fold. As a WHS & Compliance Officer, you'll be at the forefront of cultivating a positive safety culture that resonates with the team's values and motivators. They’re not just about ticking boxes here; they believe in tapping into what truly drives people—whether it's their loved ones, their passions, or their aspirations to keep everyone safe on the roads, around grain storage sites and beyond. They aren’t fans of the old stick approach; instead, they are all about thinking outside the box to find creative ways to inspire and engage. You’ll balance the safety aspects with all compliance matters within their transport operations, guaranteeing strict adherence to industry regulations and standards across processes, vehicles, drivers, and related activities. You'll be assisting with crafting and implementing compliance policies and procedures, ensuring records are as tidy as can be, and staying on top of any regulatory changes. We're looking for someone with top notch communication skills and the ability to liaise with stakeholders from all walks of life. Now, let's talk about requirements.‘For the love of farming’ underpins this business, it’s what gets them out of bed every morning, so a connection or passion for agriculture is an absolute must! You'll need an eagle eye for detail, a knack for understanding the transport industry and its regulations (especially NHVR), and hey, if you've got some previous experience in the compliance world, even better! But it's not all serious business around here. Whilst the team knows the importance of their roles, they also bring good banter around the office. So a sense of humour is most appreciated. Alright, you know the drill. Corporate Safety Audits are on the rise...Are you in the middle of an audit or have you recently been through an audit? In recent years, there has been a significant increase in corporate safety audits. Companies are placing greater emphasis on identifying risks and ensuring compliance with safety standards to protect their employees and mitigate liabilities. For instance, ArcelorMittal has undertaken a comprehensive safety audit focusing on fatality prevention, process safety risk management, and health and safety governance, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving safety practices.Similarly, Amazon has significantly ramped up its safety inspections, conducting millions of inspections globally to ensure workplace safety. This reflects an industry-wide trend towards more rigorous safety auditing. With the increase in audits, there has also been a noticeable rise in fines for safety violations. Companies are facing more stringent penalties for non-compliance with safety regulations, motivating them to enhance their safety protocols and auditing processes (EY US) (PwC).Ensuring Lone Worker SafetyAs part of this increased focus on safety, it’s crucial to ensure the protection of lone workers who often operate in isolated or high-risk environments. Implementing robust lone worker safety solutions can help companies:Real-Time Monitoring: Keep track of lone workers’ locations and status to ensure their safety.Automated Check-Ins: Regular automated check-ins help confirm that workers are safe.Emergency Alerts: Quick response mechanisms, such as panic buttons and man-down alerts, ensure immediate action in case of an emergency. The growing trend in corporate safety audits and the corresponding rise in fines underscore the importance of robust safety management systems in today's business environment. Prioritizing safety not only protects employees but also ensures regulatory compliance and mitigates financial risks.By incorporating comprehensive safety measures for all employees, including lone workers, companies can foster a safer, more compliant workplace.Stay proactive and ensure your workplace is safe and compliant!#WorkplaceSafety #CorporateAudits #SafetyManagement #Compliance #EmployeeWellbeing #LoneWorkerSafety

As I am going through the hiring process for a safety coordinator, I have been asked how I will train them, how I will impart knowledge onto them for their job. I love this question but remember when I started in Safety it was all on me. What Ideas do you have to help foster knowledge for new hires?Part of what I have done was I wrote a book that lays out what most of what one needs from a high level for work in safety in various environments from warehousing to manufacturing. Check it out if you're just starting out, or building a team; I am even willing to work with people to customize this book for a specific workplace, reach out and let's talk.#safetyprofessional

Achieving workplace health and safety (WHS) compliance isn't just about meeting regulatory requirements—it's about creating a culture where safety is ingrained in every aspect of operations. Here's a roadmap to help your organisation reach and maintain WHS compliance:1️⃣ Understand Legal Requirements: Start by familiarising yourself with the WHS laws, regulations, and standards applicable to your industry and jurisdiction. This forms the foundation upon which your compliance efforts will be built.2️⃣ Conduct Risk Assessments: Regularly assess your workplace for potential hazards and risks. This includes physical hazards, ergonomic factors, chemical exposures, and psychosocial risks. Identify control measures to mitigate these risks and prioritise actions based on severity and likelihood.3️⃣ Implement Safety Procedures: Develop and implement robust safety procedures and protocols tailored to your specific workplace hazards. Ensure that everyone in the organisation understands and follows these procedures, from top management to frontline workers.4️⃣ Provide Training and Education: Equip employees with the knowledge and skills they need to identify hazards, use equipment safely, and respond effectively to emergencies. Training should be ongoing and cover topics such as hazard awareness, manual handling, emergency response, and workplace ergonomics.5️⃣ Promote Safety Culture: Encourage open communication about safety concerns, recognise and reward safe behaviors, and empower employees to actively participate in safety initiatives.6️⃣ Regular Audits and Inspections: Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with WHS requirements. This includes inspecting work areas, equipment, and procedures to identify any non-compliance issues and take corrective actions promptly.7️⃣ Respond to Incidents: Develop clear procedures for reporting and investigating incidents, near misses, and hazards. Use these incidents as learning opportunities to improve safety practices and prevent future occurrences.8️⃣ Stay Informed and Updated: Keep abreast of changes in WHS legislation, industry standards, and best practices. Continuously review and update your safety policies and procedures to reflect the latest developments and ensure ongoing compliance.9️⃣ Encourage Participation: Engage employees at all levels in the WHS process by seeking their input, involving them in safety committees or consultations, and encouraging them to take ownership of safety within their respective roles.🔟 Seek Expert Advice: If you're unsure about any aspect of WHS compliance, don't hesitate to seek advice from qualified professionals, such as WHS consultants or industry associations.Contact us today to find out how DBell Consulting can support you.Email: contact@dbellconsulting.com.auPhone: +61 0476 414 107#WorkplaceSafety #WHSCompliance #SafetyCulture #dbellconsulting

Safety Literacy Presentation – Greg Smith It is apparent that some of my client Board Members and Officers may not be accurately informed on actual Company Safety Performance, and as a result may not be able to provide assurance that their safety management system complies with WHS Legal requirements and the intent of Company WHS Policies. To explore this in more detail, I attended an in house session on Safety Literacy presented by Jackson McDonald WHS Lawyer Greg Smith in Perth on the 16th July 2024.Greg explored several issues . See my interpretation detailed below:1.Do WHS initiatives achieve the intended outcome – how is this demonstrated?2.Do WHS initiatives contribute to a safer workplace – how is this demonstrated?3.Not sufficient knowledge of Critical Hazards and Risks – Focus is on Trivial WHS hazards.4.Assumptions around WHS reporting data (metrics) is not evaluated sufficiently5.Effectiveness of WHS Management systems, meeting WHS legal requirements is not proven sufficiently –“Inch Wide Mile Deep probing/auditing is not done.6.Room for major improvement in incident Investigations. Findings should be applied across the WHS system to determine if this is systemic or a “Once off” issue. 7.Company WHS Reporting based on Metrics such as frequency rates is of no use to the Regulator or your WHS lawyer8.Narratives and analysis which explain and provide evidence of WHS performance is useful. More focus must be placed on a narrative and not a metrics approach in CEO and board WHS reports 9.Board minutes on WHS performance (at least 2 years of data) and actions is always sought by the Regulator when a serious event occurs.10.Risk Matrixes (5*5 ,etc) cannot be explained are highly subjective.11.WHS energy onevents is primarily directed at activities and associated hazards , not so much on systems and not much at all on Organisational traits (Culture, “The way we do business around here”) 12.There is too much reliance on misleading safety metrics (LTIs, etc), time wasting, ineffective and poorly written WHS procedures as demonstrated by major inquiries into catastrophic events such a Piper Alpha, Deep Water Horizon, Montara, Longford and Pike River – examples are:ØStart Cards, Take 5sØSWMS and JHAsØToolbox Meetings ØManagement /employee field conversations.13 The Safety Industry was mentioned several times. There is lack of original thinking in the design and effective implementation of documented systems and procedures. There is a heavy reliance on the “Copy ,Cut and Paste” approach.I recommend that CEOs and Board members attend Gregs “Safety Literacy” Presentation. It will open up your eyes and mind.

WHS and Contractor Onboarding - not just paperwork but a safety culture.Safety legislation defines your contractors as workers and requires a thorough review of potential and existing contractors to ensure they are WHS-compliant and onboarded to your business correctly.Key Points✔️WHS Induction - have an induction that ensures all contractor staff have a broad knowledge of WHS requirements. ✔️Ensure the induction is not a tick box exercise - it is clear, checks competency of the individual workers and has evidence of comptance (signed) understanding and acceptance.✔️Review the contractors own WHS documentation (not just policies but documents, forms and how they turn these into operational actions).✔️Visit the contractor where they are and see how they work, checking safety in action.✔️Talk to people at the contractor and understand if they have a safety culture.✔️Set any improvement plan where required, monitor it and ensure compliance.✔️Site inspections (unannounced).✔️Include in contracts what happens for non-compliance (minor and serious).✔️ Have an onboarding plan.✔️ Gather evidence of licences, tickets and permits of each individual.Onboarding contractors is not just a checking of documents and ticking a box. Paperwork is 25% of the onboarding. At Delivering Outcomes we support our customers by bringing a comprehensive process involving our specialised team covering:✔️WHS Legislation✔️Safety documentation✔️Analysis of job safety protocols including JSA’s, Operating Procedures, and SWMS.✔️Business practices.✔️Safety culture and psychosocial.
