LET US RE-IMAGINE SHOPPING MALLS AS TRADITIONAL BAZAARSWhile the architectural design of this new mall in Vrindavan is indeed impressive and adds a traditional aesthetic to the cityscape, we must take a step back and reflect on the broader implications of introducing a shopping mall into a historical and culturally rich city like Vrindavan. The concept of a shopping mall is inherently Western and often promotes a culture of incessant consumption. This raises the question: do we really need another commercial mall in a city that has ancient roots?Furthermore, the sustainability of air-conditioned malls is a significant concern. These structures require substantial energy for cooling, leading to increased carbon footprints and higher operational costs, ultimately borne by the consumers. In a country like India, where the climate is diverse and often harsh, the energy demands for maintaining such environments can be enormous.Additionally, we must consider the uniformity of the mall experience globally. Should my shopping experience be the same when visiting a mall in Dubai and Vrindavan? Malls tend to offer a homogeneous experience focused on consumption, often lacking any unique cultural or regional elements. This sameness can make the shopping experience dull and unremarkable, detracting from the rich, diverse cultural context of cities like Vrindavan. An ideal alternative could be the traditional open bazaar markets, which are not only culturally and historically significant but also more sustainable. These markets foster community interactions, support local artisans, and reduce the environmental impact associated with large, enclosed shopping complexes.A noteworthy example to consider is the City Centre Salt Lake Mall designed by Charles Correa Charles Correa Foundation in Kolkata. This project beautifully integrates modern retail needs with the traditional bazaar concept. Only the main stores are air-conditioned, while the rest of the shopping experience is designed as shaded, open bazaars. Also, there are open plazas and other sitting spaces that can be accessed from the streets, making the place more democratic and inviting for all sections of society. This design is a perfect response to tropical climate in the Indian subcontinent, offering a comfortable shopping environment without the excessive use of air conditioning.By emulating such designs, we can create retail spaces that are not only architecturally pleasing but also environmentally sustainable and culturally respectful. It's essential to innovate in ways that align with our traditional values and the unique needs of our cities.Looking forward to insights from Ken Yeh Kiran Keswani Andrew Russin Chetan Singh Solanki#SustainableDesign #UrbanPlanning #CulturalHeritage #TraditionalMarkets #EnvironmentalSustainability #CharlesCorrea #OpenBazaar #GreenArchitecture #SmartCities #Vrindavan #NO_AC #CulturalDiversity #SALTLAKECITY #shoppingmall #designmattters

Eid al-Adha holds wisdom in several aspects of the celebration. Here are some key points:* **Faith and Sacrifice:** The story of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael commemorates the ultimate test of faith and obedience to God. It teaches Muslims about prioritizing God's will and finding strength in submission.* **Sharing and Compassion:** The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: for the family, for friends and relatives, and for the poor and needy. This emphasizes sharing blessings and caring for those less fortunate.* **Gratitude and Appreciation:** Eid al-Adha is a time to be thankful for God's provisions and blessings. Muslims reflect on their lives and celebrate with joy and contentment.* **Selflessness and Generosity:** The act of giving meat to those in need teaches Muslims about generosity and putting the needs of others before oneself.Eid al-Adha goes beyond just the celebratory meal. It's a time for self-reflection, strengthening bonds with loved ones, and giving back to the community.
