Dick Wolf TV Shows: Biggest, Best Crossover Connections (1)

All is fair in the Dick Wolf universe, including character crossovers and actors popping up on more than one series at a time.

After getting his start as a writer on Hill Street Blues in 1985, Wolf to superstardom when he created Law & Order in 1990. He has since helmed multiple spinoffs, including , which premiered in 1999.

Wolf transported viewers from New York City to Chicago in 2012 with the creation of Chicago Fire. Its spinoffs include Chicago P.D., Chicago Med and Chicago Justice.

Just when fans thought Wolf couldn’t possibly have any more procedural drama ideas up his sleeves, he masterminded the FBI universe, made up of FBI, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International.

Over the years, eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that Wolf has a few favorite actors who have turned up on his series time and again — not including the full-show crossovers within the One Chicago and FBI universes.

Jesse Lee Soffer

Soffer played Detective Jay Halstead on Chicago P.D. from 2014 to 2022, exiting partway through season 10. During his time on the show, he also crossed over to Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.

Us confirmed in June 2024 that Soffer was joining the FBI universe as the new lead, Supervisory Special Agent Wes Mitchell, on FBI: International. His debut came during the season 4 premiere in October 2024.

Charlotte Sullivan

Sullivan entered the Wolf universe with her role as nurse Anna Turner on season 5 of Chicago Fire, which aired in 2016 and 2017. She later played an undercover cop on season 1 of Law & Order: Organized Crime before her character, Gina Cappelletti, was killed off in 2021.

The actress reunited with her Rookie Blue costar Missy Peregrym in 2024 with a cameo on FBI. Sullivan played Special Agent Jessica Blake for a few episodes of FBI, while Peregrym has portrayed Special Agent Maggie Bell since season 1.

Christopher Meloni

Meloni portrayed Detective Elliott Stabler on Law & Order: SVUfor 12 seasons before exiting in 2011. He reprised the role as the star of Law & Order: Organized Crimebeginning in 2021. His relationship with former partner Olivia Benson (Hargitay) has been a central theme on the new show.

Edwin Hodge

Hodge portrayed firefighter Rick Newhouse on Chicago Fire from 2014 to 2015. He then jumped into the FBI universe beginning in 2022. The actor has been playing Special Agent Ray Cannon on FBI: Most Wanted since season 4.

Ice-T

Ice-T portrayed Isaac “Ice” Gregory on the short-lived Wolf series Players from 1997 to 1998. The show, which also starred Costas Mandylor and Frank John Hughes, followed three scam artists who help the FBI in order to satisfy their parole requirements.

Two years after the show ended, Ice-T joined the cast of Law & Order: SVU during season 2 as Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola. During season 20, which premiered in 2018, his character was promoted to sergeant.

Shantel VanSanten

VanSanten joined the cast of FBI during season 4 in 2022. Her role as Special Agent Nina Chase expanded in season 5, which ended in 2023. That same year, VanSanten made a cameo on FBI: International as the same character and appeared in one episode of FBI: Most Wanted. The actress officially joined the cast of FBI: Most Wanted as Nina Chase with season 5, which premiered in February 2024.

Mariska Hargitay

Hargitay has been playing Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU since 1999. Det. Benson has made multiple cameos on Law & Order: Organized Crime alongside her former partner Det. Stabler (Meloni) since its 2021 premiere. The cop has also crossed over to the One Chicago universe with appearances on Chicago P.D.

Tracy Spiridakos

Detective Hailey Upton (Spiridakos) joined the Intellegence Unit on Chicago P.D. in 2017 toward the end of season 4. She was briefly featured on an episode of FBI in 2020 to assist in a drug case, but she quickly learns that her investigation methods don’t work well with the bureau’s tactics. Like many of her P.D. costars, Spiridakos has also crossed over into other One Chicago episodes.

Jon Seda

Seda’s Antonio Dawson was a detective in the Intelligence Unit on Chicago P.D. from 2014 to 2019. The actor helmed the short-lived Chicago Justice as same character in 2017. He was also featured on multiple episodes of Chicago Fire, including scenes with TV sister Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) and during season 3 when his character romanced Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).

Philip Winchester

Winchester’s Peter Stone was introduced during season 3 of Chicago P.D. as the new assistant state’s attorney in 2016. His brief cameo led to his character becoming a main presence on the spinoff Chicago Justice in 2017. The actor reprised the role on Law & Order: SVU from 2018 to 2019, appearing on 36 episodes of the procedural drama.

Dann Florek

Florek portrayed Captain Donald Cragen on Law & Order from 1990 to 1995 and continued to pop up on the series after his exit, including cameos in 1995, 2000 and 2004. His character later helmed Law & Order: SVU from 1999 to 2013 before the actor left the series after 15 seasons. The Michigan native briefly returned to SVU for a few episodes in 2014 and 2015, as well as a 2021 cameo. Florek reprised the role once again to reunite with Meloni on a 2022 episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Tamara Tunie

Tunie first worked with Wolf in 1995 on an episode of New York Undercover. In 1996, she appeared in an episode of Swift Justice, playing Jessie McKenna, and an episode of Law & Order, portraying Caroline Bennett. The following year, the actress had a cameo as Martha Kershan on Feds.

Tunie’s most recognizable role in the Wolf universe is playing medical examiner Dr. Melinda Warner on Law & Order: SVU from 2000 to 2018. She later reprised the role in a few episodes of seasons 21, 22 and 23. Her character also popped up on Law & Order: Trial by Jury and Chicago Fire before Tunie made a cameo as Dr. Warner on Law & Order: Organized Crime in 2024.

Jeremy Sisto

Sisto got his start in the Dick Wolf universe playing Detective Cyrus Lupo on Law & Order from 2008 to 2010. Nearly a decade later, the actor began playing Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine on FBI, which premiered in 2018.

Dylan McDermott

The Connecticut native played villain Richard Wheatley on Law & Order: Organized Crime during seasons 1 and 2 before his 2022 departure. McDermott quickly switched gears within the Wolf universe, landing the role of Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott on FBI: Most Wanted. He made his debut during season 3 of the series in 2022 after the show’s lead character,Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix, (Julian McMahon), was killed off.

Alana De La Garza

Fans may remember De La Garza as ADA Connie Rubirosa on Law & Order. She played the character for four seasons before exiting the show in 2010. She later reprised the role on Law & Order: LA from for eight episodes in 2011 before reuniting with Law & Order costar Sisto on FBI. The actress has been playing Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille on the crime drama since 2019.

S. Epatha Merkerson

After portraying Lieutenant Anita Van Buren on Law & Order for 17 seasons from 1993 to 2010, the Michigan native landed the role of Sharon Goodwin on Chicago Med. She has been part of the One Chicago family since 2015.

Stephanie March

The Texas native had a recurring role as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot on Law & Order: SVU from 2000 to 2012. During her time on the series, March also portrayed the character on Conviction for 13 episodes in 2006. Conviction ran for one season and centered around Cabot’s role molding a group of young ADAs.

Chris Noth

The Sex and the City alum starred as Detective Mike Logan on Law & Order from 1990 to 1995 before making his way to Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2005. The character was a fixture for four seasons of the spinoff before his 2008 exit.

Josh Pais

Pais played Assistant Medical Examiner Borak on Law & Order on and off from 1990 to 2002 before transitioning to Law & Order: SVU for two different roles. He portrayed Robert Sorensen on three episodes from 2000 to 2002 before becoming character Hank Abraham from 2013 to 2016.

Julianne Nicholson

Nicholson first appeared on Conviction as Christina Finn in 2006 before making her way to the Law & Order universe. The Massachusetts native portrayed Megan Wheeler on Law & Order: Criminal Intent from 2006 to 2009 and then had a recurring role as Jill Lansing on Law & Order: True Crime in 2017.

James McCaffrey

McCaffrey played the lead character, Mac Swift, on Swift Justice in 1996. The short-lived show was created by Wolf and followed ex-cop Mac as he takes on investigations that the police can’t handle. That same year, McCaffrey joined the cast of New York Undercover for season 3, playing Captain Arthur O’Byrne.

The actor returned to the Wolf universe in 2000 with a cameo on Law & Order: SVU, playing Jesse Hansen. He came back during season 5 as a new character, Peter Forbes. McCaffrey also had a two-episode arc on Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Daniel Croydon in 2003. McCaffrey died in December 2023 at the age of 65 after battling multiple myeloma cancer.
